MY EXEMPLARS

Dreams don't work unless you do.

Nursing Science Project

Nurse Practice Model - Evidence-Based Practice

The mind map assignment was a real patient experience (my nephew) and a lesson in the value of adopting   evidence-based practice.  We used evidence-based practice to make appropriate decisions to properly care for my nephew in a time-crunch situation, before the test results came back.  Fortunately, the right treatment and antibiotics were chosen to treat the bacterial meningitis.

QSL Project

Nurse Practice Model - Leadership

Doing research for this infographic was a lesson and complete eye-opener in the evolution of leadership and management styles; exposure to new concepts is always food for thought. Organizational leadership styles are evolving and as a leader I am part of this process.  As a result, I plan to be more cerebral and purposeful about my choices and interactions as a leader.

QSL Project

Nurse Practice Model - Quality & Safety

The QIP paper was a lesson in quality and safety.  Through this project I learned the importance quality and safety in addressing sleep deprivation in the ICU.  Sleep deprivation is a relevant issue and a shared responsibility.  To problem solve through the issue it was necessary to have the perspective of the quality team.  Including the quality team transformed my perspective from a single patient experience to an entire patient population experience.

Community Health Project @ Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps

Nurse Practice Model Category - Evidence Based Practice / Education / Tertiary Prevention

This experience was a lesson that combined

Evidence-Based Practice -- I used my MBSR education to teach students & staff regarding the history and benefits of MBSR, &

Education -- it was in-classroom teaching, and

Tertiary Prevention -- as I was teaching students that had previously dropped out of high school.

Humanities Writing

Nurse Practice Model - Integrity / Principles

This writing was a lesson in integrity and another step on the path of owning my practice.  Taking the time to ponder what values were the most important in my nursing practice was key in understanding my moral and ethical convictions related to my nursing practice.

Community Health Project

Nurse Practice Model - Collaboration

This summer health fair was a lesson in collaboration.  I was an active member of a group that worked together to achieve a common goal.  I participated in conversations, meetings, and interactions that contribution to the group's success.

Community Health Project @ Mental Health California

Nurse Practice Model Category - Education

Volunteering at Mental Health California was a lesson in education and outreach.  I experienced being a support system to the mental health community by my writing an article about sleep and resilience in the Mental Health California digital publication.

Health Policy Writing

Nurse Practice Model Category - Patient Advocacy

This writing represents a glimpse of my journey in patient advocacy.  It has taken years as a bedside nurse to develop my patient advocacy voice.  Being a patient advocate allows me to help patients make informed decisions regarding my patient's health, help my patients navigate a complex medical system, and be a translator to increase their understanding of the hospital process.  My goal is for them to be able to make informed, ethical decision regarding their, or a loved ones goal of care.
