MY COMMUNITY HEALTH ROTATION

Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps (SRCC)

SUMMATIVE REFLECTION

My Community Health rotation at SRCC was a new site and I had to develop my own goals. After exposure to the students and much thought I decided to teach MBSR to the students in the anger management class.  This class was mandated for students or workers that had lost their temper on the job or in class; so I had a captive audience. The students were from underserved areas that hadn't graduated from high school, and lacked basic life skills that I take for granted.

A benefit in doing research to develop the curriculum, was that I learned more about the history and practical application of MBSR. I utilized evidence-based research and my class experience to develop the curriculum.

My presentation was geared toward students between the ages of 18 - 25 years old and consisted of the history and practical application of MBSR; it also contained three

age appropriate videos which  helped the students relate to the concept of MBSR.  During small segments of the class the students participated in trial runs of MBSR. The class was surprisingly open to the idea of using this technique to cope with stress.  During class so many of them voiced their stressors and how they really didn't know or hadn't been taught what to do with their  feelings.  And here I was in the midst of their lives trying to give them a tool to use.  Experience told me that new concepts are resisted, but these students were totally engaged in class; they were like sponges.  I feel that I met the community health requirements as well as those of the students.

Anger is never without a reason, but seldom with a good one.
